History of OVHcloud

Foundation and beginning

1999 - 2005

OVH was founded in Roubaix by Octave Klaba, an engineer of Polish origin, with the idea of providing low-cost web hosting solutions. The company stood out from the beginning by manufacturing its own servers, allowing it to significantly reduce costs and offer competitive prices. OVH began to grow in France and then across Europe, with a strong increase in its customer base.

World and European expansion

2006 - 2015

Over the years, OVH continued to grow in France and other European countries. The company diversified by offering a wider range of services, including dedicated servers, shared hosting, domains, and VoIP telephony solutions. In 2006, OVH reached an important milestone by surpassing 30,000 servers in its data centers. The company also opened its first data center outside of France, in Canada (Beauharnois, Quebec). During this period, OVH built its own global fiber optic network, allowing it to gain more control over the infrastructure and connectivity of its services.

Transition to the cloud and the innovation

2016 - 2019

With the rise of cloud computing globally, OVH decided to invest heavily in this technology. In 2016, the company raised 250 million euros to finance its international expansion and accelerate its development in the cloud. At this time, OVH also revised its strategy by offering public, private, and hybrid cloud solutions to compete with giants like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. The company adopted the name OVHcloud in 2019 to better reflect its positioning in the cloud market. It stands out particularly for its complete mastery of the production chain (from hardware to services) and its commitment to digital sovereignty, ensuring its European customers that their data is hosted in compliance with European regulations such as the GDPR.

Going public

2020 - Today

OVHcloud, the European leader in cloud computing, has experienced a crucial phase since its IPO in 2020. This operation on Euronext Paris aimed to raise funds to support its growth and enhance its visibility. Since then, the company has continued its global expansion, opening new data centers in North America, Asia, and Europe, and making strategic acquisitions to diversify its offering. By forming technological partnerships, OVHcloud has integrated innovative solutions while placing a particular emphasis on sustainability and ecology. Through this strategy, OVHcloud is solidly positioned as a key player in the global cloud market.
